Oceanside

Oceanside at a Glance

Oceanside is a hamlet in the southern Town of Hempstead. Its name has changed several times: the area was known as South Bay, then Christian Hook from 1674, Oceanville from 1864, "OceanSide" from 1890 and Oceanside from 1918. It does not actually front the ocean — Reynolds Channel, marsh islands and the Long Beach barrier island lie between — but the water is close enough to shape daily life.

In 2012 Hurricane Sandy flooded the southern part of Oceanside, and power was out for nearly two weeks after a nearby substation in Island Park failed. Garages took much of that water.

What Oceanside Garages Need

  • Salt-resistant hardware on homes south of the main roads: galvanized cables, coated brackets, sealed rollers.
  • Bottom seals that actually seal, to keep wind-driven rain and standing water out.
  • Battery-backup openers, so a car is not trapped during an outage.
  • Spring checks: rust pits on coils shorten a spring's life.

Local notes

After a Flood or a Storm Surge

If salt water reached the garage floor, check the door before you use it again. Water at the threshold sits right on the bottom brackets, the cable ends and the opener's photo-eyes. Rinse them with fresh water, let them dry, and look for rust or frayed strands over the following weeks — salt damage shows up later than you expect.

Our guide to storms, floods and garage doors goes through it step by step.

Getting to Oceanside

We come down Long Beach Road and Oceanside Road from Rockville Centre, so most Oceanside addresses are a short drive from our office. Tell us your cross street and whether the house is near the water — it tells us which hardware to bring.

Oceanside Homes and Their Garages

Nine out of ten Oceanside homes are owner-occupied, and most have an attached one- or two-car garage that gets used every day. That combination — daily cycles plus damp air — is why spring and cable calls here come in waves after the first cold snaps and after big storms.

North of the main commercial roads the wear is ordinary: springs reaching the end of their cycles, openers whose gears have stripped, rollers that have gone flat. South, toward the channel, add rust: brackets that flake away in your hand, cables with broken strands at the floor, and photo-eye brackets that have corroded loose.

A Short Oceanside Checklist

  • After any storm that wet the garage floor, rinse the bottom brackets and cable ends with fresh water.
  • Once a season, look at both cables where they hook on at the bottom.
  • Check the bottom seal for tears; replace it before winter (from $120).
  • Test the opener's battery backup before hurricane season.
  • Have springs checked if the door feels heavier than it used to.

Oceanside Garage Door FAQ

Answers as of October 2026. Still unsure? Call (516) 442-8171 and describe what the door is doing.

Do you repair garage doors in Oceanside, NY 11572?

Yes, throughout Oceanside, from the streets near Long Beach Road to the blocks near the water in the south. Repairs start at $79 and most are finished on the first visit.

Why do garage door cables rust so fast in Oceanside?

The southern part of Oceanside sits beside Reynolds Channel and the marshes, so salt air reaches the hardware all year, and storm water can reach the garage floor. Cables and bottom brackets live right at that level.

Can you help after a garage flooded?

Yes. Salt water that has reached the bottom of the door attacks the cables, brackets, rollers and opener sensors. We inspect and replace what was damaged — cables start at $189 a pair and sensors are realigned from $85.

Do you install battery-backup openers in Oceanside?

Yes. The LiftMaster 84505R has a battery backup built in and starts at $555 installed — useful in a neighborhood that has seen long outages after storms.
