Diagnosis
Common Electric Opener Malfunctions
When an opener stops, people assume the motor is finished. Usually one component has failed:
- Stripped drive gear. The white nylon gear inside many LiftMaster and Chamberlain chain and belt units wears to shavings when it is forced to lift a door with tired springs. The motor hums; the door does not move.
- Sensors out of line. The photo-eyes a few inches off the floor get bumped by bins and bikes. One blinking light, and the door refuses to close.
- Logic board damage. Summer thunderstorms and power surges can knock out the receiver, so remotes and keypads stop registering.
- Worn trolley or loose chain. The motor runs, the chain or belt moves, but the trolley no longer grabs it.
- Failed capacitor. A hum and a click with no movement can be the start capacitor rather than the motor.
Try These Before You Call
- Check the opener's light. No light: try the outlet and the breaker; garage GFCI outlets trip easily.
- Look for a lock or vacation button on the wall control. It disables the remotes but not the wall button.
- Wipe both sensor lenses and nudge them until both small lights are steady.
- Put a fresh battery in the remote.
- If someone pulled the red release cord, the trolley is disconnected — but only re-engage it if the door is balanced and the springs are whole.
Many LiftMaster and Chamberlain units blink a diagnostic code. Count the flashes and tell us when you call (516) 442-8171.
Choosing an opener
Choosing the Right Drive System for Your Home
A lot of Rockville Centre houses have a bedroom or family room right beside or above the garage, and the opener choice decides whether the house hears every trip.
Belt drive — LiftMaster 84505R or 87504-267. A steel-reinforced belt instead of a chain, with a DC motor that starts and stops softly. The 84505R adds a built-in battery backup; the 87504-267 adds a camera. Our usual choice for attached garages.
Wall-mount — LiftMaster 8500W. Mounts on the wall at the end of the torsion shaft. No rail, no motor on the ceiling: the answer for low headroom, cathedral ceilings and storage racks overhead, and the quietest option. See low-headroom garages.
Chain drive. Economical and strong, but the loudest. Fine for a detached garage at the back of the lot where nobody sleeps nearby.
Safety Sensor Testing and Auto-Reverse Verification
The UL 325 safety standard requires residential openers to have two ways of protecting people: non-contact photo-eyes, and a door that reverses when it touches something on the way down. We test both on every opener visit, not just new installs.
The contact test is simple: a piece of 2x4 laid flat on the floor under the door. The door has to touch it and reverse. If it presses down instead, the force setting or the door's balance needs work before anyone uses it again.
You can run the same test once a month with a roll of paper towels.

Opener Questions
Answers as of October 2026. Still unsure? Call (516) 442-8171 and describe what the door is doing.
How much does garage door opener repair cost in Rockville Centre?
Sensor alignment and travel-limit calibration start at $85, a motor capacitor at $90, a logic board at $179 and a gear and sprocket kit at $219. A new LiftMaster 84505R belt-drive opener starts at $555 installed.
What is the quietest garage door opener for homes with living space above the garage?
A DC belt-drive opener such as the LiftMaster 84505R or 87504-267 is the quietest ceiling-mounted type. Quieter still is the LiftMaster 8500W wall-mount, which sits beside the door and leaves nothing on the ceiling (from $885 installed).
Can you install an opener that I bought from Home Depot or Lowe's?
Yes. Installing a customer-supplied opener starts at $279, including the rail, header bracket, sensors, wall console and programming your remotes. We check that it suits your door's size and weight first.
Why does my garage door open but not close?
The safety sensors at the bottom of the tracks are almost always the reason: blocked, dirty, knocked out of line or with a damaged wire. Wipe both lenses and check that the small light on each is steady. If it still refuses, call us.
Should I repair or replace an old garage door opener?
Repair it when one part has failed on an otherwise sound opener. Replace it when it is close to 15 years old or more, has no photo-eye sensors, is a loud chain drive under a bedroom, or the repair approaches half the price of a new unit.
